Conquering the 8th World Wonder (Second Installment)

Very few jeepneys make a trip to Lagawe, and most leave the town on schedule. We made sure we wouldn’t miss the one scheduled to leave at around 10:30am. The trip was a one and a half hour-ride. We reached Lagawe few minutes past lunchtime, and from there, we took another 30 minute-jeepney ride going to Banawe.

Contrary to what I predicted, the ride was quite smooth. The roads, past the rice fields and local villages, are surprisingly paved. In few occasions do I appreciate American country music, and that instant happened to be one of those. Another thing that puzzled me, also, was their fondness of the genre, and Arlo told us that they were influenced by the western missionaries who have come and gone since the 1950s.

We reached Banawe past 1PM. A few walks took us around the business complex to choose local hand-woven items, find a restaurant to have lunch at, buy more food for the longer trip up the mountains, and take photos of the imposing panorama. I was relieved that the Banawe Rice Terraces on our backdrop (with all the big stores and inns that have sprung at a number of points) were not exactly the one we’d see on postcards. Arlo told me these really were the veiled Ifugao village and terraces in Batad.

At around 2:30, we hired a tricycle to take us to the junction. We agreed to pay the driver 150 bucks to take us there (it should have only been 50 pesos had we known the local commutation fare), but halfway through the rainy and bumpy trip, some landslide had blocked the way and we had no other option but get our butts off the trike and start walking. up:gucci handbags

Because of the high altitude, frequent rains are natural. It was sunny but not excruciatingly hot. And strange, it was also raining on our way to the peak. Being novice backpackers, we went there unprepared without raincoats and flash lights. We covered our backpacks with medium-sized garbage bags to keep our stuff from getting soaked.

After few meters through the rough terrain, an almost fully-loaded jeepney passed by. We were fortunate that the driver let us hop in and that some locals willingly gave up their seats for us. I simply couldn’t get enough of their cordiality.

Inside the jeepney, people were speaking a language that I heard of for the first time. With most of my family hailing from the Ilocandia, I can comparatively discern whether a person speaks the dialect. I double-confirmed with Arlo, who knows the Ilocano dialect far better than I do, if they spoke Ilocano, but he reaffirmed they were speaking a completely different one. I inconspicuously observed the people around us and found one very prominent habit – chewing up betel nut chunks (“nga-nga” as these are more popularly known).

According to some townsfolk, this is their organic stimulant and they chew wads of these to carry out their daily tasks. I cannot relate to this routine, save for my father’s telling me that they would more or less get the same pleasure from “nga-nga” as people who find bliss in chewing gummy mints. Sorry to say that due to time constraints, I didn’t get the chance to interview the locals. Those red marks on the ground, however, prove that this is one famed Ifugao trait.

After about ten minutes and a quick glimpse at smaller brooks and waterfalls, we finally reached the junction. This is exactly where backpackers and villagers headed for the grand terraces get off. A signboard welcomed us to the trailhead. It informed us that there about 9 kilometers (approximately an hour and half trail) leading us to this UNESCO World Heritage Site. And so was our challenge!

On our way up 4,000 feet above sea level, the trail got narrower and coarser. This, amongst all the adventures I’ve taken, challenged my endurance and spirit the most. I never imagined the trek to be that intense. To revive our drained bodies every so often, we’d find ourselves resting and marveling at those glorious natural wonders – feathery clouds hanging over peaks of mountains fully clad by lush greens; clear water rushing down those steep and rocky ridges; and birds gleefully chirping much to our nodding heart’s content. Still, I got this feeling that the trail was unimaginably never-ending. As the three of us ran out of remarkable people to crack jokes about, I soon found myself very much consumed by the silence. A few more strides and we reached the summit. Great, we just covered half of the trek!

From the apex, the sight of an incredibly steep and slippery trail raised my adrenaline to unthinkable levels. I totally forgot all of my recurring personal and professional issues, and all I focused on was my survival. One wrong step and I’d slip off to my doom.

We were grateful that after about two hours of extreme physical torture, willpower had let us reach the Hillside Inn before twilight. The cool mist started to cloud the horizon. I could run out of fine adjectives to describe the first time I caught glimpse of the Batad village and terraces. It was just spectacular!!!

After a half an hour rest, we took a quick bath to rid our bodies of sweat and grime. The water felt ice-cold!!! Understandably, I could not just request the owner to boil bath water for us. I guess that would be too much asking for a discounted hundred peso a night accommodation. Konting tiis na lang. After changing to my ever so comfy shorts and sweater and having a quick bite on those Big Bang bars (Remember those chocolate bars from our childhood?), I told Tian and Arlo that the three of us take a short snooze, and then just reassemble around 7 for dinner. I went into my room and turned my lights on so I wouldn’t fall into a deep slumber.

***
Our plans for dinner got kaput. With lights turned on and strange noises coming from my window, I awoke. I checked the time and was so shocked to know that it was past 11 already! Knowing that the villagers sleep early, finding a place to eat at that time was certainly impossible.

I kept on hearing those weird noises. For some reason, my imagination went wild! Images from that “Shake, Rattle, and Roll” episode starring Manilyn Reynes and Ana Roces suddenly turned vivid. Imagine being invited to grace a fiesta in a barrio of “aswangs.” That’s like the worst thing to happen on an out-of-town trip. Alright, natakot talaga ako. What if those blood-drenched “aswangs” were just waiting outside? I didn’t even attempt to look out my window. Pacing through the dark hallway and using my digicam as an improvised flashlight, I went into Arlo’s room like a petrified kid. Ginising ko talaga sila. Trying to look composed, I asked them if they had dinner. They were as shocked as I was for having realized we all missed it. Glad to know that we packed some food for a midnight snack. As we were munching those cookies, I confessed to them that I heard eerie sounds from my window so I hurriedly went into their room. At natawa lang sila. But I was serious; I mean I don’t easily get scared by such “aswang” stories, but that experience was just different. When we were all full from that stomach-filling snack, I had no choice but go back to my room, turn off the lights, shut my eyes, and pretend as if eerie thoughts didn’t ever come up.

I couldn’t sleep, so I thought that I should get over whatever I was troubled with. I took very cautious moves as I reached for the curtain that partly covered the window. My heart pounding fast, I slowly raised the curtain and found one astonishing sight.

Bugs of different shapes and sizes were making their way into a tiny opening on a slab of broken glass. I looked over both sides of the veranda, but I saw nothing else. What the…!!! So apparently, I was petrified by the sounds these tiny insects were making! And only later on did I realize that the lights coming out my window attracted these little guests. Natawa na lang ako. Having figured that out, I turned off my lights and retreated to my bed.

Before shutting my eyes, I saw fireflies flying around my room. Wonderful! These were one of the sights from my childhood that I had definitely missed. Initially there were just few, but in a couple of minutes, I found myself gazing at one even more breath-taking view. In my room, I saw nearly thirty lights flickering against the shadows of the night. While kids got glow-in-the dark pieces stuck on their bedroom ceilings, I was lucky to have real ones hover on mine. The experience was divinely mystifying! After bowling over this amazing display, I dozed off to dream land.

These are the best days

I'm all excited for tonight! In few hours, it's another night of drinking, singing, and dancing sessions with high school friends coming over. I feel bad, though, that Arlo's gonna miss the fun. Even so, I bet he has well spent moments reconnecting with family. up:gucci bags

I am feeling so low today. Five hours of sleep gave me a really terrible migraine.

I was having a quick bite outside the office building when, for very obvious reasons, everything in this area suddenly turned hollow and artificial.

Conquering the 8th World Wonder (First Installment)

Mah good! It’s been almost two weeks since I came back from my hike to Batad and I haven’t told much about this exploit (a la conquistador!).

The trip to Batad was probably the toughest I have taken in my lifetime. It wasn’t just like any other trip when I’d find myself relaxing to a serene view of a white sand beach, sipping a quenching tropical concoction, and sound-tripping to some chill out vibes. It was completely and almost shockingly different! up:gucci bags

***
Darn it! I woke up really late that Saturday (past 12 na yata.) I was to meet Arlo and Tian around 1 at the Victory Liner station, but wait; 10 minutes of grogginess had gone by till I realized that I had not taken a shower and not packed my bags. The bus bound for Tuguegarao was scheduled to leave at 1:30pm, and mah bad, I’d ruin all our plans!!!

So after shower I quickly rammed my essentials in to a single duffel bag. Undies-check, sports shirts-check, short pants-check, sweater-check, toiletries-check, and yeah, camera-check! Donning a comfy shirt, jeans, and my sturdy pair of mojos, I was all set for Nueva Vizcaya. Taxi!!!

Possessed faces welcomed me as I got off the cab at the terminal. Great! The bus we were supposed to board left 20 minutes earlier. Of course I felt really terrible for my chronic tardiness. So for them to not feel TK (tampong kulangot), I, being everybody else’s perpetual reason to wait, wait, wait, volunteered to buy our drinks, chi-cha, a Gardenia loaf, and a pack of Puffins at the nearby 7-11. Oks lang. =)

And so we waited for about an hour and a half till boarding time. We left the Kamias terminal at exactly 3:45 in the afternoon.

***
After more or less 8 hours on the road, we arrived at Arlo’s place in Solano, Nueva Vizcaya. The night was infectiously quiet and I loved it. First time in so many months since I saw fireflies and heard the sound of crickets. Arlo’s parents are simply the coolest. I’ve known them since high school and they’ve been known amongst my high school circle in the area of naturally making friends feel at home. Funny was Tita Cel, expecting that we’d arrive by lunchtime, even prepared lunch for us.

So there, after kamustahan and a hearty dinner, we changed clothes and retreated to our bedroom past midnight (Arlo’s older sister, Ate Aira, willingly gave up hers to accommodate the three of us that night. Bait talaga. Hehe! =0)

***
We had a quasi guided tour of Solano (c/o Ate Aira) and the nearby provincial capital, Bayombong. Part of the itinerary was of course to visit his Lola Saling, who happens to be one of the few famed hermanas in the poblacion. A very intriguing personality, she noticeably has. Make-up and a regular visit to the salon are few of her guiltless pleasures. (Ganda ng lola mo!) She‘s very conscious about her looks that she, wearing make-up, a classy outfit, high heels, and gleaming jewelry, prances around Divisoria as she scouts for potential suppliers. (Di pa naman sya nahohold-up.)

Tita Cel also described her as overly religious who never missed going to the cathedral to hear the mass at 5:00 in the morning. At daytime, she is a meticulous and industrious proprietress who, at her age of 79 (pwede ako i-correct dito), is a known distributor of furniture, heaps and rolls of cloth from China (and I suppose Thailand), dried flower ornaments handcrafted in Bicol, small souvenirs and giveaways, and so on. Funny thing is that since her bigger than usual shop is understaffed, she lets her clients do self-service in hauling whatever they need from there. She’d let her loyal suki get those rolls of Thai silk on the topmost shelf if they needed it, and she wouldn’t mind if doing so contradicted the whole concept of customer service. Even with that her base of loyal customers continues to grow. BEAT THAT!!!

We met her and she welcomed us in to the shop. She appeared exactly just as I imagined. Posturang postura with the make-up, the jewels, and the air-filling perfume.

Ate Aira’s purified water refilling station, adjacent to Lola Saling’s shop, has been in daily operation for over a year now. The prospects of growth are really good that they opened a franchise in Solano.

After this short city tour, we finally set for Batad.

Do you belive in life after love?

Got this meme from Dean.

You may go to this site and up:gucci handbags and look out for the search bar at the left side of the screen. Type in the year of your high school graduation. Enter. Click on the top 100 hits (one of the search results). Copy and paste the list into your blog and feel free to comment on the soundtrack of your naive years. Anyway, here's mine (Personal favorites in set in bold.).

***

1. Believe, Cher - One big hit! Sabi nila gumastos ng USD 100,000 ang lola nyo para magpa-overhaul. I just started loving its club remixes.
2. No Scrubs, TLC - Come back hit for the trio. Big fan of this song. I remember Sporty Thieves came out with "No Pigeons."

4. Heartbreak Hotel, Whitney Houston - Okay lang.
5. Baby One More Time, Britney Spears - I admired Britney Spears' energy about a couple of weeks after topping the Charts. But I got tired of hearing the same bouncy tunes after a couple of hits. Nagustuhan ko na lang ulit when she came out with "I'm A Slave For You..."
6. Kiss Me, Sixpence None The Richer - Big fan of this song.

Updates! Updates!

Sorry guys, I have been hibernating for the past week due to my ever, busy schedule. up:gucci handbags

So, my daily routine totally changed on Monday morning when, instead of going to Makati, I headed for Eastwood. Yep, management relocated us to where the freshest of professionals ride the ever-rising ICT tides. The move has been quite stressful especially when you're doing day-to-day operations front and back office. I'm grateful, though, that I had managed to service my clients amidst emergency downtimes for intermittent network tests.

I don't have much complaints about the workplace in general, except that, one, the workstation dividers are glaringly flaming red orange; two, the A/C is surely turning the office into one glacial compound; and three, the floor itself looks like one big maze (there are just too many doors and hallways leading us to the pantry and the bathrooms). I'm starting to love my workstation, though, but I miss the pale blue and yellow colors of the old one. I'm certain I haven't gotten over my little heartaches of having to move out of the Makati office. It always felt like my workday wouldn't be complete without having witnessed the daily near-stampede hullabaloo at the Cubao MRT station =P. Anyway, I guess, this was just destined to happen.

***
Commencing Monday, braving the grimy streets of Cubao has become a routine. By the way, this is one place in QC that my sister would describe as "nanlilimahid" with the number of nearly condemned buildings still standing and quite a number of mendicants and drifters roaming like stray cats. Passing by the small alleys and the old COD building (now PureGold) has made me a little nostalgic. I know people my age have fond memories of the Fiesta Carnival rides, the COD Christmas displays, the well-lit Christmas tree that stood right across the Big Dome, and the festive parades of the Regal Babies (Please contact SKY, if you'd like to know who they are.) Right, there's a tinge of bitter-sweet reminiscing but I'm sure, as I brave the pollution and the traffic on a daily basis, everything shall pass.

Man, I need to find a place somewhere near the office.

***
It surprised me when another work colleague bade farewell to the team. I got this feeling that tendering one's resignation has steadily become a trend. I learned from a teammate that while he needed a career change, an offer for a job in marketing came and he accepted it. Lucky guy. I've considered either taking a career shift or going to graduate school, but I'm giving myself few more months 'til I'm finally decided.

***
I still don't know what's up for the weekend. My sister will be celebrating her 20th birthday and she's yet to decide where we can have a quiet dinner. I've plans of inviting her close friends to our place, but I doubt that I'd have the energy and the creativity to prepare for her blow-out. I'm not sure even, if her friends would willingly brave the potential heavy downpour and traffic going from Manila to Northern QC. Guess I need an Eventology 101 refresher.

***
I'm glad the work week was a breeze. Ngaks, may utang pa akong kwento about Batad...=) So even before I let pollution and traffic ruin my Friday night, I'd groove to this "Video."

Make way for India.Arie, boys and girls!!!

Last Song Syndrome

I’ve been humming the tune for the past couple of days and now contemplating on the lyrics, I suddenly get sentimental. This song fills in me a feeling of gloom as I sense this man’s yearning for somebody whose love he can never, ever have.

It’s too depressing my days let cynicism put in the shade my idea of synchronicity.

"You're Beautiful"
James Blunt

You're beautiful. You're beautiful.
You're beautiful, it's true.
I saw your face in a crowded place,
And I don't know what to do,
'Cause I'll never be with you.
You're beautiful. You're beautiful.
You're beautiful, it's true.
There must be an angel with a smile on her face,
When she thought up that I should be with you.
But it's time to face the truth,
I will never be with you.

Basang basa sa ulan!!!

It would have been a hectic day at the office, but then it turned out action-packed in the streets which made me decide not to set off for work. Shitty, coz as I hustled past the EDSA-Quezon Av intersection to catch the next southbound train, heavy rains dropped like A-bombs, devoid of any meteorological caveat. Hauling my ever-portable folding umbrella from the abyss of my full to bursting gym duffel bag needed some six hundred eighty six and a half calories. This got me 50 percent soaked right before my ever-handy shed gave me some cover. And coolness, I realized the winds traveled at about a hundred kph! So luckily, this caused my umbrella to break, leaving me with no other good option but dash to the nearest shelter. I sprinted past the pedestrian lanes uttering, “Paking syet! Paking syet! Paking syet!” (Sino bang hindi mapapamura pag tumatawid sa mga kalsada dito sa Pinas?). Great! I reached McDonald’s with my pants dripping with filth and rainwater. When I got in, I took my work-out shirt from my gym bag to sponge up. That very instant, I decided not to head for work anymore since this incident completely impaired my mood to slave out in the office.

Kaya hayun, I just SMS’d my team that since I got rained on and was too drenched and spoiled to interact with clients, I’d take a leave. Good thing, the boss didn't mind.

As expected, the rain didn’t stop pouring for another 30 minutes, thus I chose to stay and have a full breakfast. I ordered Jasmine tea at the adjoining McCafe to calm my senses. Awa ng Diyos, na-calm naman! =)

At dahil wala na rin akong magagawa na di ako makapasok, I rushed to the newly-opened Bench Fix Salon at the neighborhood mall. The stylist saved the day. I think I like my new do (How narcissistic!) hehehehe!
